- New South Wales is located in the Southeast region of Australia, with the capital city of Sydney. Bordering states such as Victoria to the South, Queensland to the North, South Australia to the West, and the Tasman Sea to the East.
Population and language:
- Population: 8,166 million people
- Most of the population in NSW speak English, and people in NSW also speak a language other than English at home such as Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Greek, etc.
Climate:
- NSW sometimes has a temperate climate. Summer temperatures range from about 24oC to 30oC, and the winter average temperature is about 12oC.
- Summer lasts from December to February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August, and spring from October to November.
Education:
- There are more than 1600 schools, 104 Technical and Higher Education institutions, and 5 major universities across the NSW region.
- The University of Newcastle and the University of Wollongong are both ranked among the world’s top 300 universities in the Times Higher Education Index 2018 (out of more than 26,000 universities worldwide).
Economy:
- NSW is Australia’s small business powerhouse with 34% of small businesses in Australia based in NSW.
- The NSW Government has worked hard to ensure small businesses can start, grow and prosper in a low-tax, low-regulation environment where barriers are reduced, and opportunities are created. Various forms of support are available when needed.
- New industries such as information technology and financial services are largely concentrated in Sydney and have taken over, with many companies having their Australian headquarters in the Sydney CBD. In addition, the Macquarie Park area in Sydney has attracted the Australian headquarters of many information technology companies.
- Coal and related products are the largest export of the state.
